The Idea

17 locations, 6 people, 3 shows.

1 Van.

That’s right – this summer, BoxedIn Theatre are back with another exciting tour, taking us around Scotland, overseas to the Republic of Ireland, through Wales, and then ending up with a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

What’s the big idea?

You know us so well!

Theatre is such a powerful and beautiful medium, with the strength to change the world. It’s amazing. But it’s not particularly accessible, is it?

Did you know that the average price for a theatre ticket in the UK is £25? Or that, annually, over half of the performances in the UK take place in London?

We think that’s a real problem, and it demands a solution. So we’re setting out to find one.

Right. And how exactly do you plan on doing that?

Easy. With our trusty side-kick Vanny Devito, we will be pitching our beautiful performance tent (which is yet to be named) in 16 different rural and remote locations across the UK and Ireland. That means that between the tent and the van, we’re going to be building a mobile performance space that can be used pretty much anywhere!

Audiences will be invited to come and engage with our shows throughout the day and in to the evening in a space that is familiar to them – one of the many green spaces at the heart of their community. And while that happens, we’ll be drawing on our experience of site-specific theatre to connect with these spaces, and show just how powerful they are by editing and building on our pieces as we go.

In doing that, we’re aiming to encourage an entirely new performance practice that places rural and remote communities at its centre – we’re going to finish the project with a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to show audience members and theatre makers just how powerful that performance practice is, and encourage its continuation.

That sounds pretty cool – is there anything else you want to add?

Just one small thing – tickets to all our shows on this tour will be capped at £5, and 1/4 of our shows will operate on a pay-what-you-want basis. That means that we won’t be pricing anyone out of our shows, and they will be available for anyone and everyone to enjoy.
